For some of
you folks the fifties are a time to remember, for the younger generation it’s a
time to learn about. Here’s some facts about the 1950s. In no particular
order.
Let’s
have some fun by remembering what was popular in the 1950s
American
Bandstand – an American music performance and dance television program by Dick
Clark.
The
Jitterbug – a kind of dance popularized among African Americans in the US with
various types of swing dances.
The Hula
Hoop – a large hoop spun around the body by gyrating the hips, for play or
exercise (still popular today)
Drive-in
movies – large outdoor screen, a projection booth, concession stand and a large
parking area for automobiles, you can view the movie from your vehicle (still
around today)
Panty Raids
- raiding girl's college rooms and taking panties. (Not anything for today)!
Telephone
Booth Stuffing – A fad that involved a bunch of people consecutively entering a
phone booth until it could not hold any more. (Probably no phone booths left)
Sock Hops –
or record hop was an informal sponsored dance event for teenagers featuring
popular music.
Poodle
Skirts – a wide swing felt skirt of solid color displaying a design of a
poodle.
Bobby Socks
– short socks reaching just above the ankle.
And of
course, very popular, Diners and Jukeboxes, like Blast From The Past and Blast
From The Past Too
